"Well, I won't lie to you. He died drunk, squeezed between a boat and a lock. A real river-gypsy's death. But he could sing. Play the piano. His smile would break your heart. You've got his same beautiful eyes.
When he was sober he was kind and gentle. His trouble was, he fell in with the wrong crowd when he was a boy."
Mr. Gray (unknown name) was the husband of Polly Gray and father of Michael and Anna Gray. He has never appeared on-screen, and was first mentioned in series 2, when Polly remarks to Michael how much he looks like him, and he asks her what he was like.
Backstory[]
Mr. Gray was a river Gypsy and married Polly Shelby sometime before 1903. They had two children, Michael Gray born in 1903 and Anna Gray, born in 1906. Polly mentioned that Mr. Gray could sing and play the piano, but due to his troubled childhood, he was a drunk. Sometime before 1908, he fell into the canal drunk and died while wedged between a boat and lock.
