Charlotte Murray attends Grace and Thomas's wedding. Michael gives her cocaine. She wants to come to Birmingham because it's dirty, and she wants to sleep with him because she thinks he would be dirty. The two continue to see each other after the wedding.

Later, Michael gets Charlotte pregnant. They both panic, as Charlotte's family have affianced her to someone else. When Michael tells Arthur and John about the situation, they tell him he needs to "marry the girl." Michael replies that Charlotte doesn't want to keep the baby. John tells him about a woman who has helped two women Arthur impregnated have abortions. Michael arranges for an abortion from this woman for Charlotte. Michael meets with Charlotte for the last time at the abortion house, but leaves her alone there despite her pleas for him to stay with her during the procedure.
